Insert header and footer

The header and footer can be used to insert page numbers, but also to display text and logos on each page.

Insert header and footer

To insert a header or footer, we click on the Insert tab. There we click in the group “Header and Footer” on the button Header or Footer, depending on what is to be inserted.

A menu appears in which we can select specific templates. By clicking on one of the templates, a header or footer is inserted.

Now you see the header and footer area displayed, the rest of the text disappears in the grey background. The placeholders [enter here] can now be clicked and a name, a heading, etc. can be inserted into the header and footer.

By clicking on the “Close header and footer” button in the Draft tab, we can close the footer.

If you want to save yourself a few clicks and thus time, there is also a quicker way to edit the header and footer.
To activate it, double-click on the top or bottom edge of the document. You are now directly in the header or footer.
To exit, click in the middle of the document so that the main text is visible again.

Kopf- und Fußzeile bearbeiten

To edit the header or footer, click on the “Header and Footer” button again and then on Edit.

If the first page is not to contain a header or footer, a tick can be placed under First page different in the Options group under the Header and footer tab. If the printed document is printed on both sides, a tick can also be placed under “Even & odd pages different”. This way, for example, the page number is always at the outer edge of the double-sided printed document.

If different sections of the document are to have different headers and footers, we use section breaks. On the last page of a particular section, we click on the tab Layout -> Page Setup -> Breaks. In the menu that opens, we select “Next Page”. Now a section break has been inserted.

In the new section, the header and footer can now be edited again. Under the tab “Header and Footer” in the group Navigation we click on the symbol “Link to previous”. If the symbol is coloured, the header and footer are linked to the previous one, so that, for example, a working title or a consecutive page number is taken over. If the symbol is grey, the sections are not linked and the header and footer of the new section can be labelled and formatted independently.

Formatting in the header and footer

The format of the header and footer can be changed under the Home tab in the Font group – the procedure is equivalent to that for adjusting regular text. Here, font size, line spacing, left and right alignment, etc. can be set.
